Welcome to the Virginia Mayflower Society!
The Virginia Mayflower Society, founded in 1950, is a non‑profit, educational, charitable, hereditary organization dedicated to preserving and honoring the enduring legacy of the 102 passengers who sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. Since our founding, more than 2,000 direct lineal descendants of those Pilgrims have become members of the Virginia Society and, through it, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) headquartered in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Virginia has long played an active role in the national Mayflower community. Many of our members have served the General Society with distinction, including Miss Mildred Ramos, the only Virginian ever elected Governor General of the GSMD. Their leadership reflects the strength, dedication, and historical stewardship of our Commonwealth’s descendants.Today, the Virginia Mayflower Society includes nearly 600 regular members and more than 375 Junior members. Information about both categories of membership can be found on our Membership page. Every third year, a Virginia delegation joins representatives from the 54 Member Societies—spanning all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Europe, and Australia—at the General Congress in Plymouth. Many of our members also participate in Pilgrim‑family gatherings held in conjunction with the Congress, including groups such as the Pilgrim John Howland Society, the Elder William Brewster Society, the Governor William Bradford Compact, the Warren Cousins, the Alden Kindred of America, the Soule Kindred in America, and other GSMD‑endorsed Family Societies. We are also proud to support scholarship and historical research through the Mildred Ramos 1620 Early American History Award, a $3,240 grant presented to a master’s degree candidate at William & Mary whose work in early American history best reflects the educational mission of our Society. As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026, the story of the Mayflower and its passengers takes on renewed meaning. Their courage, faith, and commitment to self‑governance helped lay the foundations of the American experience. Here in Virginia, we look forward to commemorating this milestone year by honoring their legacy, strengthening our educational outreach, and welcoming new descendants into our fellowship. I invite you to explore our website, learn more about our programs, and join us in preserving and celebrating the Pilgrim story for future generations. Nancy Quigley Saul |
